![]() ![]() ![]() Some people would probably recognize Jon Briggs as the person who voiced The Weakest Link. It’s hard to track down all of the people who voice Siri, but we have identified three – Susan Bennett (the US female version), Karen Jacobson (the Australian female version), and Jon Briggs (the British male version).Īll three are accomplished voice actors. There are male and female voices and different versions all over the world. If you are using Apple devices outside of the US, you know there are other variations of Siri. She was Siri’s main voice until September 18, 2013, when Apple rolled out the iOS 7 update. She was the original female American voice of Siri when it was first introduced on October 4, 2011, on the iPhone 4S. ![]() She’s a seasoned voice actress and was also a former backup singer. Siri’s real name, or rather her voice actress’s real name, is Susan Bennett. But if we’re talking about the person behind the voice, Siri would be a brunette, older, but indeed a capable woman. But if you were to look through the Internet, plenty of Apple users share their take of how Siri actually looks like. It’s not as if Apple gave a concrete description of how she would appear if she were a real person. The Siri voice also now sounds more human than that of a robot. Today, Siri’s voice is available in different languages and even has a male version. It’s not a normal speaking voice that you’d expect to hear from a person. Siri’s voice is robotic with a pitch a little lower and not evenly spaced like the natural way people speak. The original Siri voice is that of a woman. Her voice also paved the way for Apple to be one of the leaders in the voice market. Today, Susan Bennett’s voice is in the hands of millions of people around the world. Instead, she recorded the voice-over for Siri in July of 2005, even before Apple bought Siri. She’s an American voice actress who provided the voice behind voice assistant, although she isn’t contracted by Apple. There hasn’t been any confirmation from Apple, but it’s become evident over the years that the person who voices the original Siri is Susan Bennett. ![]() But there’s one thing you must be curious about – “Who is the voice of Siri?” Its intelligence and abilities have grown over the years, as has the voice acting and voice over industries. Apple didn’t waste time in acquiring Siri, which is now available in pretty much every Apple product. Taken in totality, I would say that S Voice offers a very good approximation of what Siri adds to the iPhone - helping you take notes, look things up, schedule meetings, or check the weather - but that extra functionality isn't yet useful or polished enough to make these voice assistants a real selling point for new phones.Siri is a voice-controlled personal assistant that first appeared on the iPhone as a standalone app from a start-up company of the same name. Siri is faster, S Voice can do more, but neither is really good enough Which of the two approaches you prefer will be a matter of personal preference. The majority of queries sent to the iPhone are greeted with an aural affirmation of some sort, whereas S Voice tends to provide results quietly (and also includes the option to turn off audio responses altogether). Siri is also a lot more vocal than Samsung's application. On the other hand, S Voice can actually perform geographical searches whereas Siri seems to think everything I search for is within the UK and refuses to try and help with locational queries. It consistently provides an answer ahead of its Samsung competitor. In terms of speed, Siri has a distinct advantage over S Voice. S Voice does the latter quite a bit more often than Siri does. Similarly, both Siri and S Voice have a tendency to rely on external search engines for their results, sometimes integrating them in stub form within the app and sometimes throwing you out to a Google search. That's a big stumbling block for any piece of software that aims to streamline your user experience with a smartphone - if you have to repeat or correct yourself, you might as well use more conventional means to achieve your goal. Both demand that you enunciate studiously if you care to have your query recognized, and even then some hilarious misinterpretations can and do occur. The first thing to say is that neither Siri nor S Voice is particularly good. In anticipation of that time, I've brought the two together for a side-by-side comparison to determine which performs better at the daily tasks one might wish to entrust to a robot-voiced virtual assistant. Apple's Siri, introduced as the big new feature in the iPhone 4S, is facing its biggest competitor to date in Samsung's S Voice, an extremely similar voice-activated mobile assistant that will make its retail debut with the Galaxy S III early next week. ![]()
